Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency has been linked with fibrocystic breast disease, hypothyroidism, and some cancers such as breast and thyroid. Iodine is an essential nutrient and a common deficiency both historically and currently due to decreased consumption in our diets and increased exposure to pesticides and medications that compete with iodine uptake.

Test Ordered:

Iodine Plus (urine):
This tests for iodine deficiency as well as increased intake of bromine. Bromine exposure inhibits iodine absorption. This test also measures selenium and cadmium levels. Selenium is an essential nutrient for thyroid function and cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that interferes with the actions of selenium and inhibits thyroid function.
